Land of movies and movie festivals

With its passion for movies, Serbia and Belgrade have long become important destinations for all film lovers, and lately, many movie stars.

Land of movies and movie festivals

Winter weather, low temperatures, rain, wind, or snow are often a mere excuse for many of us to stay at home, feeling comfortable in front of the TV, or with mobile devices in our hands. The internet has definitely brought the whole new world into the warmth of our homes. Still, we should not forget how good we feel when we spend time outside, outside the home. Whether we are in the company of our friends, our beloved one, or with children, and even just surrounded by an unknown but interesting world, staying outside is desirable and comforting even during the winter months. The fact is, however, that during this period, there are very few interesting things to do compared to summer, when everything is about concerts, throwing parties and having a good time.

What we often forget about is movie screenings and theater performances. The once-popular cinemas have been put aside and transformed into multiplexes comfortably housed in large shopping and entertainment venues.

For fans of genuine, high-quality work of the seventh art, numerous film festivals still exist. And as another festival year is ahead, it would be good to be reminded of what awaits us, what festivals we can attend and what we can see at them.

As far as Belgrade is concerned, Fest is first and foremost, both in terms of the calendar and relevance. The International Film Festival - FEST has been taking place 48 years in a row, from February 28 to March 8, 2020. We expect the best film creations from around the world, distinguished guests from the world of film, retrospectives and other contents that we simply should not miss.

But before that, for those who both unintentionally or even on purpose, head for Mokra Gora, for the 13th time, the KUSTENDORF International Film and Music Festival takes place. The festival will be held from January 13 to January 18, 2020 in the famous Drvengrad on Mokra Gora. This festival is an opportunity for young and not yet established filmmakers to showcase their ideas and accomplishments, alongside the prominent names of contemporary filmmakers from around the world. In addition, staying on Mokra Gora and Drvengrad is a unique experience in itself.

After the Fest, a series of more or less well-known film festivals are coming to Belgrade and throughout Serbia.

The Magnificent 7 European Feature Documentary Film Festival takes place during the month of April and has had 15 editions so far.

The BELDOCS Festival takes place in May and should not be missed by all means. This is the 13th international documentary film festival this year. Authors and filmmakers around the world are invited to submit, display and promote their work, as well as to participate in various workshops, projects and competitions.

During the month of June in Belgrade you can see the movies within the International Human Rights Film Festival called HUMAN DISTRICT, founded in 2013. In July, the well-known European Film Festival PALIĆ takes place. The 27th edition of the festival was announced for the period from 18th to 24th July in Palić and Subotica.

In September and October, the Belgrade International Film Festival for and by People with Disabilities - BOSIFEST, followed by the European Animated Film Festival - BALKANIMA, the Serbian Fiction Film Festival, and the International Ethnological Film Festival held at the Ethnographic Museum.

In addition to those mentioned in October, there is a KIDS FEST – The Children's Film Festival. This year's festival is being held for the fifteenth time, and the festival's program includes animated, feature and documentary films aimed at preschool and school-age children

The last two months of the year have been reserved for several quite significant festivals. The very popular FREE ZONE is being held in November and is intended for all those interested in the so-called engagement cinema, film products that address current social phenomena and issues both in the world and in the region. This festival was founded in 2005 with the aim of popularizing this type of cinema and is being held in three cities simultaneously - in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Niš. The author's film festival has been taking place for 25 years and the Belgrade audience is very happy to attend it. The filmmaking festival is by no means missed, as these are very high quality works that we will hardly see on other occasions.

In addition to the above, cinema lovers have the opportunity to see the International Green Culture Festival - GREEN FEST as well as the International queer film festival – MERLINKA.

In addition to Belgrade festivals, other festivals on various themes and engagements are held throughout Serbia all along the year. One such festival is SILAFEST - the International Festival of Tourist and Ecological Film, which takes place in Veliko Gradiste and on Silver Lake.
